From room to room, step by step, this behaviour often raises questions (and worries). Learn the nuances!
š¶ Following you ā being ātoo dependentā
Dogs are social beings. Staying close can simply mean:
You are their safe reference
They feel connected and relaxed around you
They have learned that good things happen nearby
A dog who follows you but still settle, is usually just⦠comfortable.
ā ļø Itās worth paying attention if your dog:
Canāt relax when you move
Becomes anxious when you close a door
Constantly monitors your movements
Struggles when left alone
This may point to insecurity or hyper-attachment, not āclinginessā
šæ What helps (gently)
Build emotional safety before asking for distance
Reward calm settling (even if itās close to you)
Keep routines predictable
Allow independence to grow naturally, never by forcing separation
A secure dog doesnāt need to follow you everywhere. But security always comes before independence.
